Before I begin, let me say thank you to my new blog followers and those who have been with me since the beginning. I heart you. Have some chocolate cake and a cookie:
I am so done helping university students out as I have been screwed over a few too many times. Most are immature and busy; bad combination. Here are five rules I live by when it comes to helping university students:
- Rule #1: Never lend your textbooks or notes to anyone (say that you need them); you won't get them back in time for the next exam and you'll look like the bad guy when you repeatedly ask/remind your class mate to give them back. They should get their own book anyway. Too bad if they lost it.
- Rule #2: Lending a pen/stationary means giving it to them for keeps unless you take their shoe as collateral.
- Rule #3: Say no first, then reconsider, not the other way around. Saying yes is fine, but it looks unprofessional if you take your promise back.
- Rule #4: Check your schedule before saying yes.
- Rule #5: Be ruthless but polite and respectful. Your classmates are grownup by now, they can handle their own irresponsibility.
Am I being harsh? I'm not really. Think about it: there are times where we should help others, and there are times when your responsibilties and success come first. This is university life. Mind you I'm not unhelpful: I do help friends and colleagues who are dependable and who help me out as well.

thats a bit harsh! but i agree, its completely necessary. i only lend pens that i know are about to run out of ink, so its no loss when i inevitably never get them back.
I don't really think it's harsh; I believe in kindness and compassion, but in the case of university (which costs a LOT of money and time), I try to keep in mind my responsibilities: to succeed and do my beset. If I'm doing that, well, I will help others succeed!
Zoe, I like what you said about lending pens!
Hahaaa oh such wise talk.
It's a shame we have to learn the hard way when it comes to things like this.
I keep handy one or two spare pens I never use for that very purpose! But I think that "Never help a school student" is also an important lesson... there's nothing like a little kindness to encourage irresponsibility. lol.
Hahaha, yes Anna, you are soooo right.
